The new regime for barristers starts on the 1st January 2017. For more details, do take a look at the BSB website here.
Whether you are looking forward to the new Continuing Competence scheme or reminiscing fondly about your 12 hours a year requirement, our flexible online CPD training courses remain a straightforward and informative way to complete your CPD this year and looking forwards into 2017.
Thank you for your continued custom.
As solicitors gear up for their new Continuing Competence CPD scheme from 1st November 2017, the Bar Standards Board is hot on their heels. They are currently consulting on the best way forward, and are running a series of roadshows (see the full list here). The BSB has draft guidance available for barristers, but won't issue final guidance until December 2016 after they have consulted with members of the Bar at their various workshops.
Copying directly from the BSB's website here - this is the current plan:
From 1 January 2017, the summary of changes is as follows:
You will no longer have to complete a minimum number of hours;
You now have individual responsibility for what training you require;
There is no longer a requirement to complete accredited hours;
You have increased flexibility in the types of CPD activities that you can complete;
We will assess whether you have planned and completed your CPD in a structured way;
Assessments of current CPD compliance will be made by taking into account your CPD activity in previous years; and
The role of our supervision team in setting Corrective Action for non-compliance has been formalised. This means that the focus on the regulation of CPD will not be on disciplinary action but on ensuring that you comply with the CPD requirements.
Compliance with the CPD scheme will continue to be monitored and assessed via spot checking.
Referral to the Professional Conduct Department will be reserved for persistent non-compliance or non-cooperation.
Solicitors have been preparing for change in their CPD scheme for the last couple of years, with many solicitors already having moved over to the new Continuing Competence scheme which becomes compulsory from 1st November 2016. The move away from compulsory hours and prescribed activities to a cycle of reflect, plan, address, record and evaluate is changing the way that solicitors look at CPD. Solicitors can of course continue to undertake their 16 hours under the old scheme for this 2015/2016 CPD year. The SRA Toolkit will help anyone wanting to find out more about the scheme.
The Bar Standards Board announced on 14th April 2016, that they too are moving to a new scheme for the next CPD year. Moving to a more flexible scheme, the BSB is planning to remove the minimum hours requirement, and widening the scope of activities which can amount to CPD - all from 1st January 2017.
Of course, this is far from the end of CPD, but these new approaches, require more planning as to what CPD you will need to complete. Our CPD offers a range of skills and knowledge which can help you to complete your CPD: from legal updates, guides to legal topics and IT skills.
This year, of course, barristers still need their 12 hours, and solicitors can choose whether to stick to the 16 hour scheme or move over. Our 2016 Subscription is a cost-effective way to complete your CPD; for £199 you get access to all of our 2016 CPD (currently 68 hours' worth - just £2.93 per CPD hour). Alternatively, you can pick and choose your CPD course from our selection, for just £18 per CPD hour.
We are delighted to announce a new option for our customers in 2016. The 2016 Subscription!
In addition to being able to buy courses individually, or choose a selection that suits you, many of our customers wish to use a larger number of our courses.
We have offered a multibuy discount of 25% for customers purchasing 12 hours or more, but this new subscription option provides even more flexibility.
For a one-off fee of £199 you are enrolled in every single course that we offer in 2016. This includes all of the courses currently available on the website, as well as all additional courses that we add to the site during the year.
We are introducing this new subscription with a reduced price until 31st January 2016 of £175
Today (15th January) there are 33 hours of CPD available on the website - at our regular rate of £18 per CPD hour that would cost you £594 and with our normal 25% discount it would still be £445.50. With our introductory subscription offer of £175 for all of our 2016 courses, the cost drops to just £5.30 per CPD hour. As we add more courses during the year, the per hour cost will just get cheaper and cheaper.
Giving you access to a range of courses covering specific practice areas as well as those which are general and therefore suitable for all practitioners, this is a cost effective, hassle-free way to maintain your competencies and meet your learning and development needs for 2016.
One payment = year-long access.
£199 for all your CPD - add the subscription to your basket and you will be immediately enrolled in all of the 2016 courses.
